NBC News reports this week that the Republican-led North Carolina legislature passed a bill that would significantly restrict voting rights. Under the purposed bill, approximately 200,000 voters could be disenfranchised within the next two years because they are not U.S. citizens. Also, there is no mechanism for citizens to sue the state to enforce their rights unless they can prove they faced discrimination based on race. Critics assert the bill is designed to ensure the will of white, Republican voters who voted for Donald Trump in 2016 will be respected.
“Politics is important now. Politics is more important than ever,” said Andrew Lewis, a professor of political psychology at the University of Liverpool and director of the Centre for the Study of Elections and Democracy. “For a sense of power, you have to feel as though you can stand up and try and influence politics.”
Lewis notes that political surveillance has experienced an unprecedented surge recently during the Trump administration because of the tensions around race, gender and anger. He says that while there was a similarly sharp uptick in protests during the 2008 and 2012 presidential election cycles, the current spike in both the number of protests and the volume of provoked participants is unprecedented.
“The key is to show the government, the administration, and other people in the world that you are taking them seriously,” said Lewis. “When you see things being done that are politically motivated and you are not standing beside people doing politics, you are demonstrating that you don’t see it as a game.”
This week Americans are calling on Facebook and other Silicon Valley companies to do more to oppose the growing trends of both the frequency and severity of mass shootings. They are also calling on the tech firms to do more to stop the spread of violent ideologies. Indeed, one of the movements demanding commentary on gun control was started by a young female survivor of the December 2018 mass shooting at the Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, one of which resulted in the death of 17 attendees.
